The Parish Nurse Ministry provides clinical expertise and compassionate care, at no charge, to medically underserved people in the following Cincinnati neighborhoods:

Parish nurses visit clients in their homes, in the hospital or in nursing facilities. Funded in part by the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, the non-denominational ministry provides services to help people better manage their health to improve their quality of life.

The story below provides one example of how the Parish Nurse Ministry makes a difference in our community.

When parish nurse Sharon Eberhart received a referral from the Perinatal Care Coordinator to visit Rita, she assumed it would be like many others. When she met with Rita for the first time she learned there was much more to her situation than met the eye. Rita related the story of her previous pregnancy, which included severe post-partum depression. Rita had been suicidal and had even had thoughts of jumping off a bridge…and taking her newborn with her. Rita was terrified that she would have the same problem after the birth of this baby. She had begun to call various agencies looking for the mental health services she knew she needed, but she had not been successful in finding help. Sharon also began to make calls. When she did not get the answers she was looking for, she appeared in person at the mental health agency, explained Rita’s situation, and asked for assistance in obtaining the services that Rita needed. While it still took several weeks and a few more phone calls, Rita did finally receive counseling. She delivered a healthy baby several months later and continues to receive mental health services today. Rita doesn’t know what might have happened if she hadn’t met Sharon. Advocating for clients is just another way the parish nurses continue to provide compassionate care.
